Over-The-Counter Changes for 2011

As you may already be aware, the new healthcare reform legislation includes FSA changes that take effect Jan. 1, 2011.  These changes may likely impact your FSA expenses and overall desired contribution amounts for 2011, as certain over-the-counter (OTC) items will then require a prescription to be considered an eligible FSA expense.

As of January 1, 2011, the list of items that will require a prescription includes, but is not limited to: acne medicine; allergy medicine; eye drops; indigestion medicine; laxatives; nasal sprays or drops; ointment for cuts, burns, or rashes; and pain relievers.

Items that will remain eligible without a prescription include, but are not limited to: band aids; birth control; braces and supports; contact lens solutions and supplies; elastic bandages and wraps; first aid supplies; and reading glasses.

Remember to take this into consideration when determining your FSA contribution amounts for 2011.  For more information, contact your ESG Human Resources Consultant at 888-810-8187.
